I remember the years past…making my lists…checking them twice.  I remember having every last gift wrapped and ready by Nov 1st, boy did I have a lot of free time then! This post is for all my last minute sisters and brothers who like I are starting to fight the inner anxiety of LAST MINUTE SHOPPING! AHH!

This year it is past Hanukah and 3 days til Christmas and my list is done, but alas…none of the shopping is!

Oh, my how I loathe the idea of the mall period…much less Christmas week! In this modern internet world one can shop without leaving the house (but the shipping is gonna cost ya!) and so this year I will bake and craft and do whatever it takes to keep from mall madness and shipping costs.

Need ideas, recipes and crafts…Check out our 10 Last Minute Gifts (Old School Blog Post)…

And if all else fails give an Artsy Drawn IOU:)

What better way to celebrate National Cupcake Day than with a Holiday Party for the Cupcake Chef team?

This past Tuesday, the team gathered at Havana Hideout on Lake Worth Ave. to celebrate the holiday season and prepare for the upcoming year. In addition to the yummy mexican food, the team enjoyed a little Basil Berry Sangria, Complimentary Chocolate ChilePepper Ice cream, and some gingerbread hookahs. Plus, the restaurant offered an interesting ring toss game (Sheridan finally hooked the ring towards the end of the night:). A great time was had by all! The team enjoyed the festive meal and are looking forward to helping others prepare for small and large parties as 2009 comes to an end and we get ready to enter 2010. Its gonna be a sweet new year!

Unsung Heroes: Delray Beach woman active with the Loxahatchee Group

By Darcy Clinton, Special Correspondent

December 20, 2009

Name: Ursula Gatti Rafer

Age: 30

Residence: Delray Beach

Birthplace: New Orleans

Career: Owner and baker for Chef Divine Dining, Home of the Cupcake Chef

Family: Husband, Sheridan Rafer

Cause: The Loxahatchee Group, one of southeast Florida’s 17 Sierra Club chapters. The 3,000-member group, comprised of Martin, Palm Beach, St. Lucie and Okeechobee residents, meets monthly and provides a variety of ways for members to become active and involved environmentalists.

Q. Describe your volunteer role.

A. I have been a member of the Sierra Club since 2006 and an executive committee board member since 2008. My role on the board is to help generate new membership in Florida.

Q. How did you choose this organization?

A. My father is a plant pathologist. He taught me the importance of protecting nature. My hope is that one day my children will enjoy the parks, beaches and natural areas as I do now.

Q. Why do you volunteer?

A. I have been volunteering since childhood. Both my mother and father taught my siblings and me to give back to our communities through our gifts and passions.

Q. What community involvement opportunities does the Loxahatchee Group offer?

A. Each year, our local chapter campaigns to keep our preserves and wildlife safe, sets up and runs educational booths and tables at local events, runs an Inner City Outings program to teach children about animals and the environment, offers an annual scholarship to one Florida Atlantic University student, as well as many other wonderful outdoor activities designed to help us appreciate our sunny Florida lives.

Q. What projects is this organization working on?

A. During our annual holiday party this year, we raffled donated items from many local green businesses to raise money for the Elaine Usherson Environmental Scholarship Fund, the Inner City Outings program and conservation efforts. Shelia Calderon and Kay Gates, our party committee chairs, worked tirelessly on this event. Whole Foods of Wellington and Palm Beach Gardens donated all the food. Everyone had a great time while raising money for these worthy causes at the same time.

Q. Aside from money, what does your organization need?

A. We are looking for volunteers to help with our Inner City Outings program. After training, volunteers help organize and facilitate the outings with the children. It’s a really fun program and a great way to get involved.

For more information about joining the Sierra Club, visit http://www.florida.sierraclub.org/loxahatchee or call 561-699-3923.

If you know a Palm Beach County resident who deserves recognition for volunteer work, fax the information to 954-429-1207 or e-mail to darcylynnclinton@yahoo.com. Nominations should include volunteer’s name, city of residence, a contact name and phone number, and a brief description of why this person deserves special recognition.

How The Cupcake Chef has helped….

We partnered with Starbucks and The Caring Kitchen in a food drive to provide healthy, after-school snacks for at-risk youth in the local area. The Caring Kitchen is a charity that we support by providing 5% of all our earnings to help support their programs (please see Our Charity link).

We donated dozens of cupcakes and towers for an auction to raise funds for other charities and green initiatives. We joined the Surf-Rider Foundation to promote beach clean-ups in our local area.

We would love for you to continue “saving the world, one cupcake at a time” in the upcoming year!

What can I do???….

  1. Be aware of the talents that you have and see how you can use them to help charities in your local area.
  2. Find out what charities or needs are in your local area. If any of them are important to you or you would like to help out – contact them and see what you can do to help them.
  3. Tell them what your talents are and see if they have a need for you.
  4. Remember that the little things count – a smile, holding a door open, connecting with the people you see everyday can be the most charitable thing you can do – and that is huge!!!
  5. Volunteer your time – you can tutor people, help adults learn to read, help people learn to speak or read English, volunteer in schools as an extra pair of hands and so much more
  6. You can raise money for causes you care about – bake sales, garage sales, charity dinners, auctions, etc.
  7. Do not be afraid to search online for ideas about raising money for charity, local charities, national organizations and international organizations.

We can all save the world, one cupcake at a time….

Please leave a comment about what you are doing to save the world, ideas for other people, and charities that you like.

Aromatic Bath Fizzers

Add some fizzing aromatic fun to your next bath! These bath fizzers are fairly simple to make, and a lot of fun to drop into a warm bath as they fizz and bubble and cause the water to roll!

Bovine Bubblers

Ingredients Needed:

  1. Baking Soda (2 Tbsp): This can be found at any grocery store.
  2. Citric Acid (2 tsp): This can be found at many grocery stores or candy-making supply stores.
  3. Essential Oils (20-30 drops): These not only give your bath fizzers their own unique scent, they also add the benefits of the essential oil you use to your bath.
  4. Water in a Spray Bottle: Cool water in any type of spray bottle that can spray a fine mist.

Instructions:

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of citric acid in a small bowl.
  2. Drop 20-30 drops of your desired essential oil or blend into the baking soda/citric acid mixture and stir it until combined. If desired, add a drop of food coloring to the mixture and quickly stir until combined.
  3. Spray one or two sprays of water into the mixture and quickly stir until it is combined. Repeat this process until the mixture sticks together when compacted. The number of water sprays you will need will vary depending on the spray bottle and how much other liquid you previously added. I only used about 6 sprays from a 1 oz. blue glass spray bottle to reach the right consistency. Note: As you add the water in this step, you will probably hear some light fizzing sounds coming from the mixture. This is normal, and will continue until the mixture starts to dry.
  4. Take some of the mixture and press it into a small candy mold. Repeat this process until you have pressed all or most of the mixture into molds.Note: If you don’t have candy molds, you can shape it with your hands, or press it into cookie cutters, small yogurt containers, or any other container with smooth sides.
  5. Allow the mixture to sit in the molds for one or two minutes, then turn the molds over and gently release the bath fizzers onto a sheet of plastic wrap or wax paper by gently bending the mold away from the bath fizzer.
  6. Allow the bath fizzers to dry for a day or two until they have hardened all the way through (thicker bath fizzers will take longer to dry than these smaller ones).
  7. If desired, wrap the bath fizzers in tissue paper or foil squares.
  8. To use the bath fizzers, simply drop them into warm water. The bath fizzers will quickly fizz away, causing the water to roll, and releasing the aroma of your desired essential oil or blend into the air.

Extra Ideas

  1. This recipe can easily be made into larger amounts. Just keep the proportions of 1 Tbsp Baking Soda, 1 tsp of Citric Acid and 10-15 drops essential oil.
  2. Make fun fizzing surprises by hiding small soaps or plastic toys in a larger Bath Fizzer. Just pack a large candy or soap mold about half-way with the mixture, place a small soap or toy in the center, then pack the rest of the mold with the mixture. These larger Bath Fizzer surprises will take a few days longer to dry and harden than the smaller ones.
  3. Place several bath melts in a small basket, jar, or plastic container to give away as gifts. Combine some of the bath fizzers with some bath melts, aromatherapy soaps and some exfoliating foot scrub for an aromatic-bath gift basket.

Natural Lip Balm

Lip Balm

This creamy lip balm recipe is a lot of fun to make! You can make just one kind, or you can experiment and create several different flavors. Lip balm also makes a great addition to any gift basket!

Ingredients Needed:

  1. Beeswax: This can be found at local health stores, craft stores, or candle-making supply stores. It is available either in its natural golden color, or it is also available in a bleached white color. It can be purchased either in blocks that can be grated with a cheese grater to get smaller pieces that are easier to work with, or it can also be purchased as small pellets. For this recipe you will need one tablespoon.
  2. Cocoa butter: This can be found at many health stores, or any other store that sells soap or lotion making supplies. You will need about one-half tablespoon for this recipe.
  3. Sweet almond oil: This can be found at many grocery stores and health stores. You will need 4 teaspoons for this recipe.
  4. Honey (optional): This gives your lip gloss a sweeter taste and smell. You can use up to one teaspoon for this recipe.
  5. Vitamin E (optional): This can be found either as capsules in most health and grocery stores, or it can also be found as a liquid in many drug stores. You will need either one capsule, or 3-4 drops of liquid for this recipe. Besides being an antioxidant, Vitamin E is also a natural preservative and will help your lip balm last longer.
  6. Essential oils: These not only give your lip balm its own unique scent and flavor, they also add the benefits of the essential oil you use to your lip balm creation. Some favorite essential oils to use are peppermint (with or without honey), birch or wintergreen (with honey—add a drop of vanilla for a “rootbeer” flavor) or one of the citrus oils (such as orange, lime, lemon, or grapefruit) along with the honey (one caution about the citrus oils—they are photosensitizing and can increase the risk of sunburned lips if this lip balm is worn while out in the sun). Because lip balm is worn on the lips and might end up in the mouth, make sure the essential oils you use comes from a source that can be trusted to produce pure oils without any chemical additives. You will need about 5-10 drops of essential oil for this recipe.

Instructions:

  1. Pack grated beeswax or beeswax pellets into a Tablespoon size measuring spoon until it is packed level with the top, then dump the beeswax into a heat-proof measuring cup (such as a Pyrex™ brand measuring cup).
  2. Pack cocoa butter into a one-half-tablespoon size measuring spoon until it is packed level with the top, then dump cocoa butter into the measuring cup with the beeswax.
  3. Add 4 teaspoons of sweet almond oil to the beeswax and cocoa butter. If a sweeter lip gloss is desired, add up to 1 teaspoon of honey.
  4. Place the measuring cup in a large frying pan that is filled with 1″ of hot water.
  5. Place the frying pan and measuring cup on the stove and turn the burner on low.
  6. Stir the mixture in the measuring cup with a popsicle stick or bamboo skewer every couple of minutes until the wax is completely melted (about 15-20 minutes).
  7. Turn off stove and carefully remove the measuring cup from the frying pan and place the measuring cup on a towel on a counter-top or table.
  8. If desired, stir in the contents of 1 capsule of vitamin E (or 3-4 drops liquid vitamin E). Stir in 5-10 drops of your desired essential oil or blend.
  9. Pour the mixture into lip balm dispenserslip gloss containers, or any other small jar or container. This recipe will fill 4 or 5 containers. You may find it easier (and cleaner) to either use a small dropper to transfer the mixture into the small containers, or to use a small funnel to help pour the mixture into the small containers without spilling on the side.

Extra Ideas:

  1. To make this lip balm into a softer, shinier lip gloss, try adding a teaspoon more sweet almond oil, and a teaspoon less beeswax (or experiment with your own proportions to find something you like).
  2. Create fun labels for your lip balm creations using 2″ x 4″ labels. Set up your labels so that two labels fit side-by-side on each 2″ x 4″ label, then cut the label in half after printing so you have two labels that each measure 2″ x 2″. This size fits perfectly on our white lip balm dispensers.

Vanilla essential oil is becoming very popular today.

This is because it is known to infuse loving vibrations.

Where Vanilla Essential Oil Comes From

The vanilla “bean” is actually a dried pod of unripe fruit, which is native to Mexico and Central America.  The Aztec Indians are from this area and they actually combined these vanilla beans with cocoa to make a drink that they called “Xoco-Latl.”  Cortez, who was a Spanish explorer discovered this vanilla and took it home with him to Europe.  However, most of the vanilla that is used today comes from Madagascar.  It is available as a liquid extract or as a synthetic flavoring.

Vanilla Essential Oil As Aromatherapy

There are no direct medicinal applications for vanilla.  However, vanilla is often used to create an essential oil that will help you to relax, soften your anger, cause you to become less irritable and make you less frustrated.  Vanilla essential oil can blend nicely with sandalwood, bergamot, rose, balsams and other spicy oils.

Making Soap From Vanilla Essential Oil

Soap making can be fun, healthy and rejuvenating.  This soap is wonderful for your skin unlike store bought soap, which can dry out your face.  One type of soap that you can make is Almond-Vanilla soap.  For this soap you will need 1/3 cup whole almonds, 1 (4 ounce) bar of Castile soap, 1/4 cup of distilled water, 1 tablespoon of almond oil and 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla essential oil.  You will need to grind the almonds to a fine powder in a food processor, then either shred or melt the Castile soap.  In a heavy saucepan you will need to bring the water to a boil before reducing to a simmer.  Once you remove the pan from the heat you should add the almond powder, almond oil and vanilla essential oil.  Stir this mixture until well blended, then mold it and set it aside to dry for 5 hours.

Making A Scented Spray From Vanilla Essential Oil

Vanilla essential oil can also be used in homemade perfume.  This may seem difficult to do but it is actually very easy.  Once you have created this perfume, it can also be used on bed linens or as an air freshener.  All you need is a 2 ounce spray bottle filled with some distilled water, a1/2 teaspoon of high proof vodka and 40 drops of vanilla essential oil.  Once you have placed all of your ingredients into the bottle, you should then mix it gently and either allow it to age for a week or use it right away.  Each time that you use this spray you should shake it gently so that everything is mixed together.

Candlewick Room Diffuser

This fun diffuser is a great way to subtly spread the aroma of your favorite autumn oil blend throughout a room!

Materials Needed:
2 oz. Dropper Bottle: Used to hold the oil or blend. You may also use a 1 oz. Dropper Bottle as well.

Candle Wicking: This project used unwaxed cotton candle wicking without a central wire. Alternately, a wick for an oil lamp, or fiberglass water wicking material could be used. These items can often be found at craft or floral supply stores.

Essential Oils: You will need about 15-30 ml of your favorite fall essential oil or blend.

Jojoba Oil (optional): Used to dilute the oil or blend if it is too strong.

Instructions:
Remove the dropper cap from the glass bottle.
Add 15-30 ml of your desired essential oil to fill the glass bottle about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way full.
Cut the wicking material in lengths that are the same as the height of the bottle plus 1″.
Carefully remove the glass pipette from the bottom of the dropper cap.
Cut the top of the rubber bulb off a little ways above the plastic cap.
Push the wick (or wicks) through the hole in the cap until they protrude about 1″ above the top of the cap. If you are using smaller wicks, use several wicks together (I used 5 smaller wicks in the diffuser pictured above).
Starting at the top, and working your way down, unravel the top 1/2″ – 3/4″ of the wick, spreading the strands apart from each other. The easiest way I found was to push the end of a paper clip into the wick about 1/16″ from the top, then to pull it upwards to undo the strands above that point, then to move down another 1/16″ and repeat the process until the desired amount is unravelled. This step allows more surface area of the wick to be exposed to the air, allowing the oils to diffuse into the air more efficiently.
Place the bottom part of the wick(s) into the bottle with the oil, and screw the dropper cap with the wicks back into place on the top of the bottle.
Place the diffuser in a place where it won’t get knocked over easily, and there is ample air flow. Allow 15-20 minutes for the oils to soak to the top of the wick, and then enjoy your chosen aroma as it diffuses through the room!

Extra Ideas:

To make the autumn leaf arrangement shown above, use this pattern to trace the leaves onto thin sheet metal (craft stores or a home improvement or hardware store are great sources for this). Carefully cut the leaves out of the sheet metal using metal sheers (tin snips). Paint the leaves as desired (I used a copper and gold metalic finish for the leaves pictured above). Paint a 1″x 4″ x 12″ board your desired color. When everything has dried, bend the bottom 3/4″ of the stem on each leaf 90 degrees to the back of the leaf. Use a screw or a hot glue gun to attach the leaf to the board in your desired location. Cut a 3/4″ strip of sheet metal that is long enough to go around the bottle you used for the diffuser. Wrap the thin strip around the bottle to form a loop, and then fasten the looped metal to the board in your desired location using a hot glue gun. Paint the loop as desired. Place your diffuser in this loop to help keep it in place.

To give these diffusers as gifts, you may want to place the oil in a separate bottle that the recipient can use to fill the diffuser bottle as desired.
